Text of the original catalogue
The Chamba, neighbours of the mumuye and the jukun. They resisted the Fulani push or Peul in the century XVII But they had to flee and settled south of the Benué River in Nigeria. The structure of their society is monarchical, they have numerous small kingdoms ruled by a king who assumes all powers, assisted by a council of elders. This omnimode power is limited only by the force of secret societies. They are known for their mask representing a buffalo head with a crushed and elongated nose and a slightly rounded skull shaped like a vault. They have a wide variety of styles, although little is known about them.
