Full original description
Aboil it or vessel of wide body and narrow neck destined undoubtedly for funerary uses, although this type of jars also served to preserve water, oil or cereals. By its style it seems to come from Calabar, in southeastern Nigeria and near the border with Cameroon, where important deposits with bronze and ceramic figures have been found. It is difficult to determine if it is of origin Ibibio or Igbo. The cuarted aspect of its engobe shows that the piece is several centuries old and possibly more than a millennium old, but only a thermoluminescence test could establish an exact dating.
