Full original description
A woman carrying on her head what appears to be a small wineskin or barrel intended to contain palm wine or chapaló for libations.
Kulango art is influenced by Akan peoples. As in Baule art, the head occupies a large part of the body, about one third, and the legs are short and strong. A conical headdress and firm, generous breasts. A prominent, straight nose beneath clearly marked brow ridges, and an almost imperceptible mouth. A small cord around the waist seems to have held a pubic covering. The navel is striking: its shape, between rectangular and trapezoidal, is extremely rare in African art.
Dark, rough patina, appearing to have received ritual libations. It may be a statue from a family altar.
