Editorial study and sources
Editorial study of the collection · November 1, 2026. The original record is kept in the documentary archive.
Male figure of wood carved standing on a circular base, with slightly bent legs and hands resting on the lower abdomen. It has raised hairstyle, striated beard, entangled eyes and embossed marks on the face and trunk. The dark surface alternates with lighter areas on the ledges.
the attribution bailé de Côte d’Ivoire comes from the catalogue and is compatible with these formal features. The British Museum documents figures with beard, high hairstyle and hands on the abdomen. In this tradition there are sculptures of spiritual companions and others linked to forest spirits; posture and appearance alone do not allow for a choice between these functions.
The original name ‘Notable’ does not establish the rank of the person represented. This photograph also appears in EMS-134: the description refers to the available image and does not confirm that it corresponds to a different object. The width 8.150 cm recorded on the sheet is anomalous and requires measurement; is not used for this identification.
