Editorial study and sources
Editorial study of the collection · November 1, 2026. The original record is kept in the documentary archive.
Elongated forehead mask and narrowing to the chin, with two large curved appendices rising over the top. The face is almost flat and light grey; has two small holes in the eye area and a central rectangular relief with vertical grooves. This description corresponds to the photograph taken on a red background.
The appendices can be read as a zoomorphic motif, but the silhouette is not enough to determine the evoked species or a cultural affiliation. The comparison with abstract masks of equatorial Africa serves as a formal orientation, without allowing this piece to be identified as bakongo, kwélé or another group.
The original register is entitled ‘Montoro’ and lacks a culture and provenance. The same photograph is associated with FET-88; it must be checked whether these are two registers of the same object or an incorrect image association. No date or ritual function is proposed.
