Full original description
For Bidjogo everything sacred is called “iran”, whether it be an altar, a statue or a seat, and they are respected and feared objects. We are facing a statue formed by two pieces, the lower one of anthropomorphic body presents a torso with arms attached to the body and hands raised towards the front in sign of benevenida and of peace while the upper piece, detachable, represents the head of a hippopotamus, the most important fluvial animal. It is the altar that embodies a riverine divinity that protects fishing. He is given worship in family sanctuaries. Figure of hard and heavy wood that in its original place is covered with laterite. These figures, even if they have a century, as they are washed with water, they seem to have just been carved. Original data on many pieces of Bidjogo art, unknown in other ethnicities.
