Full original description

One of the best known masks of the Chamba is the famous buffalo mask, is a helmet mask, with flat and elongated jaws, overlapping, that prolong the head, crowned by buffalo horns in the same plane as the jaws. Used in millet planting, initiation rites, funerals and chief enthronements. At other times it was a war mask. This mask, in embodying the spirits of the jungle, allows us to establish contact with beings from beyond. It has anthropomorphic features. It can cure and protect against snake bites. It's a mask from central Nigeria. We have classified it as a war mask because it was its main and most important use. Ancient dark grey patina.
