Enquire about this objectFull original description
the awokois a small instrument of music of the so-called scrapers. It is used in the West African as an accompaniment to other instruments. It consists of a threaded rod of thirty to fifty centimetres, of wood normally hard, carved in spiral. The rod is topped by an anthropomorphic figure who respects the stylistic canons of ethnicity. A seed iroko of hard and round crust, small pumpkin type, emptied, is inserted into the rod and accompanied with half crushed seed of kopis. The movement of these seeds along threaded rod produces a characteristic sound.
