Full original description

The Hemba are implanted on the right bank of the Lualba River where they arrived, probably from the territory of today's Tanzania, in the century XVIII directed by Niembo and his son Myhiya. Village mainly of farmers, whose men also practice hunting and fishing. They are socially organized into clans that have a common ancestor. The head of the clan has his authority vested in him by the ancestors, and in addition to leading the cult he is the mediator between them and the people. He is in charge of guarding the commemorative statues of the most notable ancestors. The cult of ancestors occupies a prominent place dominating all aspects of religious, political and social life. Forefathers are the intercessors among him as in any animistic society the fortune teller plays an important role. As all animists recognize a creator god and be supreme.

Among his most notable artistic productions are the statues of ancestor, usually male, known as “singitis”, characterized by a beard in the shape of a necklace similar to that of his relatives the Luba with whom they have long been confused, which express great serenity and dignity. Hands always in the abdomen and your hairstyle is also characteristic. They have few masks being the most well-known ones.

Curious and old figure of the years 40 of the last century that represents a man carrying on his shoulders a woman. Scarifications in the torso.
