Full original description
These statuettes come from the Djenne region, the nearest city to the archaeological site “Jenne-Jeno”, (formerly Djenne), in the Niger Valley. These figures represent both men and women, on their feet or on their knees, often sitting on their heels, with their arms folded over their chests or resting on their thighs. From her incipient breasts or bulging belly she seems to be a pregnant young puber. The hole in the lower part, frequent in some Djenné figures, may be intended to contain magic or medicinal substances that favor pregnancy.
