Full original description

Representation of a maternity with the child behind his back. The child, does not go subject with the traditional cloth, grabs with his hands the mother's body so as not to fall. These pieces of the Baulé statuery, representing horses, belong to the soothsayers who surround themselves with numerous statues and magical objects. The more magical objects they have, the more their reputation and power are, the more a very powerful fortune teller can afford to buy such pieces. These pieces never leave the place where the diviner performs his practices, which is usually a dark place and the magic pieces are little visible by the person who will consult him, which increases the mystery. The diviner will never be asked questions about these mystical or magical pieces. This piece, being a maternity, indicates that it is intended for practices aimed at facilitating procreation. It is a small piece of great beauty that involves a sculptural work of great difficulty.
